Forgotten on the Frontlines: The Plight of Direct Care Workers During COVID-19

This article describes the role that direct care workers played during the coronavirus pandemic and how the many challenges that the workforce faced were exacerbated by the pandemic and led to a reduction in the workforce at a critical time. The article also discussed how a growing number of older adults in the United States means that the importance of direct care workers will only grow – specifically in the home care sector. However, current structures do not support this workforce and it is critical to implement changes, such as raising wages and ensuring access to quality health care, to recruit and retain more workers.
