Trends in Reporting of Abuse and Neglect to Long Term Care Ombudsmen: Data from the National Ombudsman Reporting System from 2006 to 2013

This report analyzes trends in numerous types of neglect and abuse — including physical abuse, mental abuse, and financial exploitation — in nursing facilities from 2006 to 2013. Physical abuse by non-residents was the most commonly reported complaint. An average of 11,749 instances of abuse and neglect were reported to the National Ombudsman Reporting System each year. However, reported abuse and neglect cases declined from 7.5 reports per 1000 resident beds to 5.6.
