National Domestic Workers Alliance
The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the nation’s leading voice for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States, most of whom are women. Founded in 2007, NDWA works to increase the respect and recognition given domestic workers, and for their inclusion in labor protections. The national alliance is powered by more than 60 affiliate organizations, which together have a membership of more than 20,000 nannies, housekeepers, and caregivers for older adults and people with disabilities in 36 cities and 17 states.
PHI has worked with NDWA on a variety of campaigns to improve direct care jobs. Most notably, PHI worked with NDWA—along with the National Employment Law Project, Caring Across Generations, SEIU, and a handful of other leading organizations—to successfully extend wage and overtime protections under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to millions of home care workers nationwide. This federal victory took years of joint advocacy—legal and policy analysis, online outreach, joint media activities, and more—which continues to this day, as states implement the FLSA rule and opponents fight to overturn it.
