Center for Coaching Supervision & Leadership

PHI launched the Center for Coaching Supervision and Leadership (CCSL) in 2007 to expand the impact of its unique program to improve the supervision of nursing assistants and home health aides. CCSL combines a “train-the-trainer” program for nurses and other direct-care supervisors with leadership training and on-the-job support for executives who are managing change within their organizations.

Supervisors have the opportunity to play a critical role in helping caregivers succeed on the job, to feel valued and respected, and to thrive in rewarding—but often challenging—settings. Coaching supervision is an approach to working with frontline employees that centers on developing problem-solving skills that facilitate critical thinking, prioritization, and effective communication.

PHI’s coaching approach to supervising direct-care workers emphasizes active listening and clear communication, support, and accountability. Early evidence of the effectiveness of coaching supervision encouraged the Atlantic Philanthropies and John A. Hartford Foundation to support CCSL with a four-year grant that will allow the center to provide intensive leadership and coaching support to 12 providers and more limited training to 30 additional long-term care organizations.
