Quality Jobs Foundation Highlights New Hampshire Nursing Home

June 20, 2014

Four years after being the subject of a PHI case study, the Edgewood Centre, a family-owned nursing home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, continues to provide high-quality jobs and meaningful career advancement opportunities for its direct-care workers.

The Hitachi Foundation revisited the Edgewood Centre in honor of National Nursing Assistant Week, which ran from June 12 to 19, and reported its findings in a June 11 blog post.

The blog post highlights Delsa Minster, an immigrant from the Philippines who moved to New Hampshire in 2002.

Minister started work at Edgewood as a licensed nursing assistant (New Hampshire’s term for a certified nursing assistant), and has advanced to a peer mentor and LNA coordinator.

“Edgewood is a great place to work,” she said. “I have mentored incoming staff for many years and have gained a lot through this opportunity.”

The Hitachi Foundation reports that peer mentoring has become an integral part of the training process for new hires.

Additionally, the blog post says that Edgewood has committed itself to retaining as many frontline staff members as possible, and works to maintain a caregiver-to-resident ratio of seven to one in order to ensure the best possible care.

The Edgewood Centre was one of many exemplary employers of direct-care workers showcased in PHI’s case study series, which was supported by the Hitachi Foundation.
