Perceived advantages and disadvantages of using agency staff related to care in nursing homes – This article discusses potential reasons for the relationship between agency use and quality of care. Based on results from a survey of nursing home administrators, the study found that more disadvantages than advantages were noted.

A dedicated approach to restorative nursing — This article describes a program instituted at one nursing home that selected and trained a team of nursing assistants to specialize as restorative nursing assistants (RNAs). This group of six RNAs was solely responsible for providing restorative care to 50 residents. Results of the program indicated that the program had led to more consistent and higher quality care.

Certified nursing assistants’ perceptions of nursing home patient safety culture: Is there a relationship to clincial outcomes — This study evaluates the relationship between certified nursing assistants (CNAs) perceptions of patient safety culture (PSC) and clinical outcome. The article notes a relationship between PSC and certain clinical outcomes such as reports of falls and restraint use. The authors conclude that patient safety and workforce stability are likely to benefit from programs to help measure and improve PSC.

PHI’s National Clearinghouse on the Direct Care Workforce is a national online library for people in search of solutions to the direct-care staffing crisis in long-term care. It houses over 800 articles, reports, issue briefs, and fact sheets on the direct-care workforce.
