Peggy Powell is PHI’s National Director of Curriculum and Workforce Development. In that capacity, she leads PHI’s work to strengthen the direct-care workforce through developing innovative approaches to recruitment, training, and supporting frontline workers. She also works with PHI’s policy team to advocate for effective public policies that support workforce development in long-term care. In addition, Peggy oversees development of all publicly disseminated curricula.

Peggy has been a part of PHI since its founding, and brings a wealth of organizational planning and training expertise to her current position. She has worked with organizations of all sizes to help structure programs to meet immediate and long-term needs, including: train-the-trainer programs, executive coaching, recruitment and retention strategies, and peer mentoring initiatives. She also co-developed the curriculum, Providing Personal Care Services to Elders and People with Disabilities: A Model Curriculum for Direct-Care Workers and co-authored numerous other publications aimed at strengthening the direct-care workforce.

Jill Tabbutt-Henry is PHI’s Curriculum Manager, with responsibility for coordinating the agency’s efforts to develop and prepare for dissemination a variety of teaching materials for direct-care workers, their supervisors, and consumers. These include an entry-level curriculum for direct-care workers, a communication skills curriculum, a peer mentoring curriculum, a training guide for coaching supervision, a supervisory skills training for consumers who employ and/or supervise their own personal care workers, and related training materials. Jill works to ensure that all PHI curricula reflect the adult learner-centered approach.

Jill has over 25 years of experience in various aspects of community health education and training, with over 15 years of conducting training for reproductive health staff in developing countries. Jill’s first curriculum, Strengthening Communication Skills for Women’s Health: A Training Guide, was published by Family Care International (New York) in 1995, and she has worked on numerous curriculum projects since that time. She received her master’s in public health degree from New York University in 1987.

Akiko Takano is the Curriculum Writer at PHI. She works closely with PHI’s content experts to translate their knowledge into instructional materials that are disseminated to clients. She also adapts existing teaching materials to be used in a variety of settings.

Akiko was in the book publishing industry for many years, and has also held editorial, communications, and project management positions on a number of health-related projects. Prior to coming to PHI, she was the Deputy Director of Communications at the Medicare Rights Center. Akiko is a graduate of Amherst College and earned a master’s degree in comparative literature from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
